Polar Picks: A Student Winter Playlist

A still from Angus & Julia Stone’s “Chateau” music video

Even though it’s cold out and midterms are coming on fast, winter is a great time to explore new music. Starting off with some upbeat, toe-tapping bops, and slowly winding down to some quiet acoustics, this playlist is perfect for chasing away the winter blues and getting down to some serious studying. “Hazy Shade of Winter” – The Bangles
Despite the song’s name, “Hazy Shade of Winter” is a catchy 80s rock jam. Perfect for snapping out of a winter funk, this song is a good way to start your day off strong.

“Victoria” – Beverly
With a solid beat and a melody that’ll be stuck in your head all day, Beverly’s “Victoria” is an upbeat tune that you can leave on repeat for as many hours as you may need.

“Be Your Love” – Bishop Briggs
If you’re a fan of Florence and the Machine, Bishop Briggs is definitely a musician worth listening to. “Be Your Love” combines a hard bassline with acoustic elements to give you a steady rhythm to work to.

“Sleepover” – Hayley Kiyoko
With Hayley Kiyoko’s new song, “Curious” released in January this year, now is as good a time as any to revisit bright and vibrant modern classics like Kiyoko’s “Sleepover.”

“Chateau” – Angus and Julia Stone
Reminiscent of music by groups like Of Monsters and Men, Angus and Julia Stone’s “Chateau” is an indie-folk jam that’ll have you longing for warm summer days.

“Northern Wind” – Liza Anne
Liza Anne’s “Northern Wind” is a great introduction to this folk artist’s music – and just in time for her new album to debut in March.

“La révolte” – Samuele
We have two official languages, readers! Nothing makes a better study aid than a little French-Canadian music. “La révolte” is a great introduction to acoustic French music – check out Spotify’s Café montréalais playlist for more songs like this one.

“Haunted Song” – Amarante
Just as its name would suggest, Amarante’s “Haunted Song” is an eerily lively piece of music – the kind of song to listen to when taking a walk in the snow, down by the lake (perhaps on a study break?).

“Cost of the Cold” – Joan Shelley
As we wind down this playlist, Joan Shelley’s chill acoustic, “Cost of the Cold,” is the perfect song for reading in warm coffee shops, or watching the snow fall from your bedroom window.

“Criminal” (Stripped/Extended Version) – Ships Have Sailed
This version of Ships Have Sailed’s “Criminal” is a soothing, melancholy ode to love. This slow-down song is especially great to listen to before bed, no matter how long it takes for you to get there.

“Cut My Hair” – Mounika. ft. Cavetown
Balancing a grainy 20s sound with chillstep beats, “Cut My Hair” is the gentlest way to ease you from hardcore studying into hardcore relaxing.

“Top to Toe” – Fenne Lily
Finishing up, “Top to Toe” by UK folk artist Fenne Lily is the quietest, softest song on the playlist. Whether you’re taking a break or taking a nap, this song will lull you into dreamland before getting right back into it tomorrow.
