About

The Innis Herald is Innis College’s student-run publication. With over 50 volumes published so far, the Herald has been giving the students of Innis a stage to present their thoughts and express their creativity since 1965.

For years, brave and bored students have joined the masthead, taking on the challenge of running this incredible publication. Together, the writers, artists, photographers, editors, designers, and, of course, readers, have filled hundreds of pages with history, personality, discourse, and humour. The Herald has and always will strive to put out content that is interesting, informative, and impactful!

The Man Behind the Name Sake….

Harold Innis (1894 – 1952)

You might know the man for his strong student involvement and leadership qualities, or even his animosity towards the United States during the Cold War. But for us at the Innis Herald, we find his theories on communication and the role of media far more interesting.

Innis argued that a balance between the spoken word and writing is important to the flourishing of any civilization. However, feared the dominant written media was stamping out oral writings. In his essay, A Plea for Time, he suggested that genuine dialogue within universities could produce the critical thinking necessary to restore the balance between power and knowledge. Then, universities could muster the courage to attack the monopolies that always imperil civilization.

Just like Innis, we the Innis Herald pride ourselves on exploring important issues that are happening across our world. We hope to foster new dialogues here at the herald with each coming new issue.
