And the Oscar Goes To…
Wilfred Moeschter: Every year, Molly and I compete to correctly predict the most Oscar winners.
Molly Simpson: Here’s a sneak peek at the action – 50-word reviews of 2017’s Best Picture nominees, and which one we think will win!
You know I hate revealing my picks before the ceremony.
And I love it! I’ll start with one of my favourites of the year…
“Call Me By Your Name”
Sweet and sensual, sad and wonderfully simple. I want nothing more than to fall in love in Italy while a beautiful Sufjan Stevens soundtrack plays. The chemistry between Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet is as radiant as the scenery.
“The Shape of Water”
Everything about it is achingly beautiful – the performances, soundtrack, blue-tinged aesthetic, and above all, the unlikely love story at its heart. This movie will SURELY be taking home that sweet statuette.
“Get Out”
A movie so tense that when the man behind me in the theatre coughed, I jumped. Jordan Peele does something special that makes even the biggest horror haters fall in love. Daniel Kaluuya’s eyes alone should win him the Oscar this year… and every year after – he’s a star.
“Dunkirk”
Dunkirk’s fixation with water makes for a beautiful, yet isolating experience. It’s a different beast – a slow-burning, silence-driven, gorgeous panorama of a movie that can’t be judged by the same standards as the other nominees. Actually, THIS is my pick for Best Picture, no question!
“Lady Bird”
My roommate’s mom mentioned that although Lady Bird isn’t perfect, it’s refreshing to see a movie about a young woman that’s written and directed by a young woman – I couldn’t agree more. Simple and charming, it’ll make you laugh and cry in the same scene.
“Phantom Thread”
Eddy Wang has written a great review in this edition of The Herald. I won’t steal his thunder, so check his review out instead! Regardless – wonderful movie. DEFINITELY the winner!!
“The Post”
A Streep, Hanks, Spielberg collaboration about women and journalism – it was designed to be a Best Picture nominee. It’s as great as one would expect, but admittedly not special like the other films.
“Darkest Hour”
If I wanted to watch a British man mumble for two grey, snail-paced hours, I’d re-watch The King’s Speech. Gary Oldman is great, but unfortunately Darkest Hour doesn’t have any supporting actors/actresses worth mentioning. Anyways, best movie of 2017! You bet my money’s on this!
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
A very clever movie that doesn’t problematize the police and their racism as much as I would like. That said, I still love my boy Sam Rockwell and when he wins Best Supporting Actor, I’ll pretend it was for Moon.
Well, those are the nine “best” movies of 2017, according to the Academy! Wilf, why don’t you give us a straight answer on who will win, should win, and what was snubbed?
Will Win: Not telling… but, “The Shape of Water”
Should Win: “Dunkirk”
Biggest Snub: “I, Tonya”
Will Win: “The Shape of Water”
Should Win: “Get Out”
Biggest Snub: “The Florida Project”
