Exam de-stressing at U of T
Although final papers have been handed in and the holiday break is almost here for everyone, the inescapable dread of the end of the term still looms in the air for many. Between endless sessions at Robarts and sleepless cramming nights, de-stressing is essential after all that studying. Here are some tips to help you mellow out this exam season.
Take a walk
Sounds simple, right? You would be surprised how much a short walk can relax you. After spending countless hours sitting and studying without taking a break you will be exhausted both mentally and physically. To conquer this, I suggest taking a short walk around U of T’s beautiful campus between every few hours of studying. Stroll along Philosopher’s Walk or King’s College Circle to clear your mind, feel refreshed, and be ready to buckle down and hit the books again.
Get a massage
Being crouched over a textbook for hours can cause some serious back and neck pain. Thankfully, U of T knows how to take care of its students. Hart House offers free mini Shiatsu massages on Massage Mondays in the Hart House Chapel from 12 pm to 3 pm. The massage only takes 15 minutes, which is a justifiable break from studying. Also, while you are at Hart House, be sure to check out the Hart House Library for a quiet space to concentrate.
Play with a therapy dog
Several studies have shown that playing with a therapy dog can help reduce stress. Instead of watching the latest episode of whichever show you have missed, take advantage of the therapy dog visits to the Gerstein Science Information Centre. They are available for hugs and cuddles every Tuesday and Thursday until December 17 from 11:30 am to 1 pm. Afterwards, you can study in one of the many spaces in the Gerstein Science Information Centre.
Take a movie break
Did you know that U of T has its own website that is similar to Netflix? Criterion on Demand has over four thousand films and documentaries to choose from. This site is available to anyone connected to U of T’s Wi-Fi. Everyone has a different studying schedule that works for them, but I would suggest taking a movie break every once in a while. This will allow you to have something to look forward to. So pick a category, choose a movie, relax and enjoy!
Get moving
U of T has several state of the art gyms such as Hart House, the Athletic Centre, and the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Whether your preference is cardio, weight training, or even swimming, there is something for everyone at each of these facilities. Try one of the many available drop-in classes that range from half an hour to an hour long if you’d like to try a new form of exercise. During the cold and blistery winter months, working out will serve your brain and body well and you’ll be better prepared to hit the books.
Whether you have one or five exams left to write, the exam period can be a stressful time. Just consider taking advantage of the de-stressing methods listed, and get ready for a much deserved holiday break. Good luck everyone!
