ICSS Candidate Profiles

The following are the candidate statements for the upcoming ICSS election. If you are an Innis student, you can vote either online at http://voting.utoronto.ca or in-person at the ICSS Office, located at Innis College, Room 107W during office hours. If you choose to vote in-person, you must bring a valid T-Card.

Of note is the absence of a statement from candidate Meghan Lees, who is running for Athletics Director and, more crucially, Brandon Liu, who is running uncontested for President. The only contested positions are that of Athletics Director and Social Director.

Executive Vice-President

Sarah Chocano

Hey Innis! My name is Sarah Chocano and I am running for the Executive VP position. My overall goal as an elected member of the ICSS is to change the way our students see and interact with the council. Thus, my biggest goal is to make the ICSS approachable so our decisions will reflect the needs of the students that we are representing. My platform also focusses on diversifying events, which will make events inclusive and accessible to students.

Vice-President, Finance

Janielle Palmer

As VP of Finance, I plan on ensuring that the money given to the ICSS is managed effectively. I want there to be complete transparency, so you all know what your money is going towards. I also would like to make sure that the money is being used towards things the Innis community wants and needs, as decided by your feedback. In the end, it is your money and I would like to be the one who helps ensure it’s managed correctly

Vice-President, Internal

Nancy Zhao

Hey Innis! My name is Nancy, and I’m running to be your Vice-President Internal. I aim to represent all Innis students in an equitable, conscientious, and transparent manner. The VP Internal focuses on the ICSS’s operations – dealing with the office, meetings, and communications. My goals include revamping the website with continuous updates, promoting a welcoming office space, and improving the organization and accessibility of meeting records.

Social Directors (2 positions)

Paul Kaita

Community Involvement engages individuals as well as gives them the opportunity to create positive connections with others that will ultimately enrich the world around us. As an elected member, I hope to provide opportunities that will allow students to become involved and develop their sense of community. My goal is to form an Innis community where you can discover your place of belonging and form meaningful relationships with others.

Steven Kang

HI THERE! Organizing the biggest events of the year, the social director portfolio holds a lot of flexibility, but also room for growth. A high budget means high expectations so only impacting a small portion of students is unacceptable. Expect an open social sub-committee and events that generate hype for all ranges of Innis. I won’t speak vaguely about inclusion or involvement, but if formal isn’t packed with a wait-list, I haven’t done my job.

Effie Fei Yun Liang

HEY INNIS! My name is Effie Liang, a first year Social Science student, running to be your 2018-2019 Social Director for the ICSS! The position of Social Director is to welcome students into university life through social events. I want to bring the community together, establishing more connections between all groups within Innis College and Residence, as well as Commuters. MY VISION: inclusive & equitable environment + wholesome fun at Innis!

Francisca Wiafe-Amoako

As Social Director, I will contribute to the governance of the Innis student community by always keeping diversity in mind. Whether that be by creating diverse event themes, or having the events take place at various times during the day, so everyone has an opportunity to attend events that fit in their schedule. All in all, as Social Director I will be ‘Fran’tastic by going above and beyond to plan events enjoyable for all.

Athletics Directors (2 positions)

Yiling (Helen) Fu

Seeing that we usually don’t have much people playing for intramural events, what I intend to do is to promote this in the College. I would also try organizing fun events that destress people and at the same time enhance understanding and friendship between Innis students. Also you can expect annual events like Athletic Banquet for a night of free food, friends and fun.

Alyssa Kerr

I served on the ICSS before as the 2016-2017 Social Director where I already learned the inner workings of the council. I hope to use this knowledge to my advantage to get started immediately on the changes I would like to see with this position. My main priories are to promote active living across Innis, make intramural sports teams more accessible to students and to set up more practices and games for all students to come out to.

Lydia Ng

As a commuter from Vancouver, I understand the difficulties of finding a place and getting involved within Innis and U of T. I plan on providing accessible events and activities for optimal participation, bringing fresh ideas for events to the table, and continue making a name and reputation of Innis athletics. I am driven, focus, responsible, determined, and compassionate about improving the Innis community.

Equity & Outreach Directors (2 positions)

Megan Pham-Quan

Hi Innis! My name is Megan Pham-Quan and I am running to be your Equity & Outreach Director. I am currently a first year student majoring in Philosophy and Women & Gender Studies. If elected, I will ensure that initiatives organized by the ICSS are accessible to all students. I also plan to make the Equity and Outreach portfolio more visible within the Innis community by organizing regular equity-themed activities. Please feel free to reach out!

Michelle (Yong Yi) Zhang

I will work to make sure Innis is INclusive, INvolved, and respects our diverse INdividuals by working to:

  • Maintain information equity for all students by creating inclusive channels of communication between the ICSS and students
  • Promote, events, dialogue, and exchanges within the community to encourage a safe environment for peer learning
  • Ensure all ICSS events are accommodating and barrier-free for all students

Off-Campus Representative

Brianna Lima Martinez

As commuter rep, I’d love to plan more activity events/outings for commuters, continue the success of this year’s free food events, & use online polls to try to accommodate as many people as possible to help our commuter community grow! The main goal is to make every commuter feel as much a part of Innis as if they were living across the street at the residence. I was so lucky to find this community and I can’t wait to help others join next year!

Graduate Representatives (2 positions)

Elizabeth Weber

Hey Innis! I am running to be your Grad Rep! As I enter my final year I want to give back and be a voice for Innis students. I am a great candidate for this position because I am experienced, prepared, and passionate about the Innis community. I have leadership training that equips me to plan and facilitate Grad events. As a representative of Innis I will be responsible, transparent, and passionate. I would be honoured to serve Innis next year!

Caroline Wrobel

If elected I believe that I would make a great Graduate representative. As your current ICSS Vice President Internal I am familiar with the expectations and responsibilities of the role. Some ideas for events include rollerskating, bowling, pottery classes, yoga, and Grad Gala. I would like to collaborate with other portfolios to create several larger events to accommodate and include more Innis students.
